Habits largely make up what we do day in and day out. Since our actions become habits, if we guide our actions we can shape our habits.

Everything we do either takes us toward our destiny, or intended journey, or they take us away from our destiny. Habits are the best way to keep us on track toward where we want to go.

Our journey in life has many facets: family, career, lifestyle, etc. It’s these the various facets that we need to monitor and make sure that we are going in the direction we want to go.

Your actions become habits in a three act play

Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan share in the Three Laws of Performance that your lifestyle can be re-written.

They paint a beautiful analogy about life being a three act play. It goes like this:

The first act is the past.

The second act is the present.

And the final act is the future.

The past cannot be changed. However, the present and future can.

Because you have control over your choices in the present and the future act, you have control over your destiny. You are like an author of your own life. You are the main character in your own play. And you write the script. Of course you can’t write the script of your entire environment, but you do have much more control than you might originally think.

Cornerstone habits

In her book, Better than Before, Gretchen Rubin shares four habits that you can do that will make your mind sharper and more clear. These are sleeping well, exercise, clean eating, and decluttering messy spaces.

Five steps to get your habits aligned

Step 1: Visualize your goals

You may want to write this down.

  • Where you want to be in 5 years from now?
  • Who do you want to be?
  • What kind of lifestyle do you want?
  • Where do you want to go in life?

Step 2: Write down your current actions and habits

Write down the various actions you take regularly. These are your habits.

Step 3: Determine the quality of your habits

Determine which are leading you toward your goals (where you want to go in live) and which are leading you away.

Step 4: Eliminate bad habits

Take steps to eliminate the habits that are taking you away from your goals.

Step 5: Form habits to get you to your goals

  • What kind of things do I need to do on a continual basis to get where you want to go?
  • What do I have to do each week to get to my goals?
  • What do I have to do each day to get to my goals?

ie. Reciting your personal mission statement each day. Developing a solid morning routine.

This should get you started. If you have trouble with getting started here, feel free to reach out to me for some coaching.
